The UK has reached a major milestone in its transition to electric driving, with more than 2 million electric vehicles now on the road. According to the latest figures from the Department for Transport, over 2,012,000 zero-emission vehicles were registered by the end of 2025, and that number is rising as more drivers make the switch.
While EVs currently account for around 4.8% of all licensed vehicles, the pace of growth tells a much bigger story. In 2025 alone, 528,000 new zero-emission vehicles were registered, showing just how quickly adoption is accelerating across the UK. Passenger cars are leading the way, with EVs making up a record 23.4% of all new car registrations almost one in every four new cars.
A key driver behind this shift is cost. For the first time, the average EV list price has dropped below that of a petrol car, helping to remove one of the biggest barriers for drivers considering the switch. The introduction of the government’s Electric Car Grant has added further momentum, offering up to £3,750 off qualifying new EVs. Since launching, the scheme has supported over 100,000 buyers and contributed to a noticeable rise in demand.
Infrastructure is also keeping pace with demand. There are now over 119,000 public charging points across the UK, already more than the number of petrol pumps,with significant further investment planned to expand the network even more in the coming years.
With the 2030 and 2035 deadlines under the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle mandate approaching, the shift towards electric is only set to accelerate. For drivers, that means greater choice, improved range, and more competitive pricing than ever before.
