Introducing a new era of fully electric high-performance BMWs

BMW is preparing for one of its biggest shifts yet, taking everything we know and love about the brand’s performance DNA and delivering it in fully electric form. From 2027, the BMW M Neue Klasse will introduce a new generation of high-performance EVs designed to bring the “Ultimate Driving Machine” feeling into the electric era, without losing what makes an M car feel special.

BMW has made it clear this isn’t simply about going electric it’s about redefining what performance can look like when the drivetrain, software, and battery technology are built from the ground up to deliver true M-level driving dynamics.

Design and Interior

While BMW’s announcement is heavily focused on performance engineering, what stands out is the direction the brand is taking with materials and construction. Lightweight design has always been central to BMW M, and with Neue Klasse that focus continues, but with a new twist.

BMW M has confirmed it will introduce natural fibre elements for the first time in its fully electric high-performance model range. This material has already been tested and developed through motorsport, and BMW says it delivers similar properties to carbon fibre while being produced with significantly lower CO2e impact.

It’s a strong signal that the Neue Klasse models won’t just look and feel advanced, they will be built with modern performance priorities in mind, combining weight-saving innovation with a more sustainable approach to materials.

Performance and Range

This is where BMW M Neue Klasse really starts to separate itself from the other EVs in the BMW lineup.

BMW’s next-generation M cars will feature a four-motor setup, meaning each wheel has its own electric motor. The result is a drivetrain built around precision, delivering power exactly where it’s needed, when it’s needed, with far greater control than traditional setups can offer.

What makes this even more exciting is that the system is designed to deliver the best of both worlds. BMW has confirmed that the front axle can be completely decoupled, meaning the car can deliver the classic rear-wheel-drive feel BMW M is famous for, while still having the full benefits of all-wheel drive available when conditions demand it. It’s a clever approach that not only enhances driving character, but can also improve efficiency and range on longer journeys.

Range and charging performance are also a major part of the story. The BMW M Neue Klasse will use 800-volt technology, enabling faster charging and stronger energy efficiency. It will also feature a performance-optimised high-voltage battery with over 100kWh of usable energy, adapted specifically to handle the demands of high-performance driving, including repeated high-load use.

BMW also highlights highly efficient energy recuperation, which plays a key role in extending usable range in real-world conditions, especially when driving dynamically.

Technology

Neue Klasse is as much a technology shift as it is a model launch, and BMW is building the entire platform around a new centralised electronics architecture.

At the core of the system are four high-performance computers, BMW calls them “Superbrains” , which manage everything from driving dynamics and automated driving to infotainment and comfort functions. This is designed to deliver faster data exchange across the car, which in simple terms means the vehicle can react more quickly and more intelligently.

For BMW M models specifically, one of the most important developments is the driving dynamics system known as the “Heart of Joy.” This works alongside BMW M’s bespoke control software and the new BMW M Dynamic Performance Control, unlocking a new level of precision in how the car manages traction, torque delivery and responsiveness.

BMW is also leaning into the emotional side of driving, something many performance EVs struggle to replicate. Neue Klasse models will feature predefined driving modes, simulated gear shifts and a newly developed soundscape, all aimed at ensuring the experience still feels like a true M car behind the wheel.

Safety

The biggest advantage of a four-motor, one-per-wheel system isn’t just speed, it’s control.

Because torque can be managed at each individual wheel, the car can deliver optimised traction and stability, even when pushing close to the limit. That’s a huge step forward for driver confidence in all conditions, whether it’s wet roads, cold weather, or high-speed driving.

BMW also points to improved driving safety as a core benefit of the new centrally controlled wheel drive architecture, with smoother torque distribution and highly efficient recuperation working together to keep the car stable and responsive.

In a performance car, safety isn’t just about braking or driver aids, it’s about how predictably and securely the vehicle behaves when you demand the most from it, and Neue Klasse is being engineered with that exact mindset.
