BYD has become the UK’s largest electric vehicle brand in 2026, marking a major milestone for one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive manufacturers.
According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), BYD sold 12,754 fully electric cars in the UK between January and April 2026. This gives the brand more than 7% of the UK electric vehicle market, placing it ahead of established names including Tesla, Kia, BMW and Volkswagen.
BYD Leads the UK Electric Vehicle Market
The latest figures show that BYD is now the UK’s best-selling electric vehicle brand so far in 2026. The achievement is particularly significant given the brand has reached this position just over three years after entering the UK market.
BYD has also become the most popular electric vehicle brand among private buyers, highlighting growing consumer confidence in the brand’s mix of technology, value and affordability.
This growth comes as the wider UK electric vehicle market continues to expand, with EV sales increasing by 22% year-on-year as more drivers look for cleaner, more cost-effective transport.
Strong Demand for BYD Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Models
BYD’s success is not limited to fully electric cars. The brand is also seeing strong demand for its plug-in hybrid DM-i models, which combine electric driving capability with petrol-powered flexibility.
When fully electric and plug-in hybrid sales are combined, BYD recorded 26,396 new energy vehicle registrations in the UK between January and April 2026. This represents a 9.5% market share.
BYD currently offers several DM-i plug-in hybrid models in the UK, including the SEAL U, SEAL 6 and SEALION 5, with the ATTO 2 expected to join the line-up soon.
Why More UK Drivers Are Choosing BYD
BYD’s rapid growth reflects a shift in what UK drivers are looking for from electric vehicles. With fuel prices remaining high, more motorists are considering EVs as a smarter and more economical option.
The brand’s appeal is built around a combination of advanced battery technology, competitive pricing, practical range and strong equipment levels. For private buyers in particular, BYD is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to more established electric vehicle manufacturers.
Innovation Beyond Electric Cars
BYD’s ambitions go beyond vehicle sales. The company is also investing in technologies designed to unlock more value from electrification, including Vehicle-to-Grid solutions.
Vehicle-to-Grid technology allows compatible electric vehicles to store energy and return it to the grid when needed. This could help drivers reduce energy costs while supporting a more flexible and efficient electricity network.
BYD is also expanding its work in home and utility-scale energy storage, supporting a broader clean energy ecosystem alongside its electric vehicle range.
Faster Charging Technology on the Horizon
Looking ahead, BYD plans to introduce its breakthrough FLASH Charging technology, which is designed to charge a vehicle from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes.
If introduced successfully, this could help reduce one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: charging time. Faster charging technology has the potential to make electric vehicles even more convenient for both private and business users.
A Major Moment for the UK EV Market
BYD becoming the UK’s best-selling electric vehicle brand is a clear sign of how quickly the market is changing.
With strong fully electric and plug-in hybrid sales, growing private buyer demand and continued investment in charging and energy technology, BYD is positioning itself as one of the most important brands in the UK’s transition to cleaner mobility.
As more drivers look for affordable, practical and technology-led electric vehicles, BYD’s momentum in the UK market looks set to continue.
