One of the biggest barriers to electric vehicle adoption has always been charging time. While battery technology has advanced rapidly, many drivers still compare EV charging with the speed and convenience of refuelling a petrol or diesel vehicle.
The world's leading manufacturer of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) has officially demonstrated its revolutionary FLASH Charging technology in the UK for the first time, showcasing charging speeds that could redefine what drivers expect from electric mobility.
Presented at BYD UK's headquarters in Uxbridge by Executive Vice President Stella Li, the live demonstration introduced a new benchmark for EV charging performance:
Ready in 5. Full in 9. Cold Add 3.
For the electric vehicle industry, this is more than a technological milestone. It represents a major step towards making EV ownership more practical, accessible and convenient than ever before.
What is BYD FLASH Charging?
FLASH Charging is BYD's next-generation ultra-fast charging technology, designed to dramatically reduce charging times while maintaining efficiency, safety and real-world usability.
Working alongside BYD's latest Blade Battery 2.0, FLASH Charging can deliver up to 1,500kW of charging power through a single connector, making it one of the fastest EV charging systems ever demonstrated.
The technology introduces a simple but powerful concept:
Ready in 5
Charge from 5% to 70% in just five minutes.
Full in 9
Charge from 10% to 97% in only nine minutes.
Cold Add 3
Even in extreme temperatures as low as -30°C, drivers can charge from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes, only three minutes longer than standard conditions.
These charging times bring EV charging closer than ever to the convenience traditionally associated with fuel stations.
How Fast is FLASH Charging in Real-World Driving?
The UK demonstration featured the DENZA Z9 GT, the first vehicle destined for the UK market capable of accepting FLASH Charging.
Based on its WLTP combined range of 372 miles, the results are remarkable:
-
A five-minute charge can add approximately 223 miles of driving range.
-
A nine-minute charge can add approximately 323 miles of driving range.
For many drivers, this means gaining enough energy for several days of commuting during a short coffee stop.
It also changes the conversation around long-distance travel, reducing charging stops from lengthy breaks to brief pauses along a journey.
Solving More Than Speed: Smarter Charger Design
While charging performance captured headlines, BYD's FLASH Charging system also addresses another common challenge for EV drivers: ease of use.
The innovative T-shaped charging unit features dual vertically suspended charging cables mounted on an integrated rail system.
This design offers several advantages:
-
Easier connection regardless of charge port location
-
Reduced cable weight and handling effort
-
Improved accessibility for drivers
-
Prevention of cables dragging on the ground
-
Cleaner and safer charging experience in wet weather
It's a practical example of how charging infrastructure is evolving to improve the overall ownership experience, not just charging speed.
The Infrastructure Breakthrough Nobody Expected
Perhaps the most significant aspect of FLASH Charging isn't how fast it charges vehicles , it's how quickly it can be deployed.
A common assumption is that ultra-fast charging requires massive upgrades to the electricity grid. In reality, BYD's solution takes a different approach.
FLASH Charging stations utilise integrated on-site battery storage systems that continuously recharge throughout the day.
Depending on demand, these systems draw between approximately 100kW and 560kW from the grid, storing energy until it is required for high-power charging sessions.
This approach delivers several benefits:
-
Reduced pressure on local grid infrastructure
-
Faster deployment of charging locations
-
Lower installation complexity
-
Improved scalability for future expansion
-
More efficient use of available energy capacity
For charging network operators and infrastructure partners, this could significantly accelerate the rollout of ultra-fast charging across the UK.
300 FLASH Chargers Planned by the End of 2026
BYD has already confirmed ambitious deployment plans.
The company intends to install approximately 300 FLASH Charging units across the UK by the end of 2026, with installations planned at DENZA retail locations and additional strategic sites.
This rollout marks the beginning of a new generation of charging infrastructure designed specifically for high-performance electric vehicles and future battery technologies.
As charging speeds increase and charging anxiety decreases, the barriers preventing some consumers from switching to electric vehicles continue to disappear.
Setting a New Standard for Premium Mobility
Speaking at the UK debut, BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li described the event as another important milestone in the company's electrification journey.
"The first demonstration of FLASH Charging in the UK is another significant landmark for the technology. FLASH Charging's ability to make our second-generation Blade Battery ready in five minutes, full in nine minutes, and to add just three minutes in cold weather sets a new standard for the future of premium mobility."
Li added:
"Our DENZA brand is driven by technology that inspires, and witnessing FLASH Charging today, as shown by the Z9 GT, is truly inspirational."
