This revolutionary ultra-fast charging system dramatically cuts down charging times, bringing them closer to the speed of refuelling a petrol / diesel vehicle, directly tackling one of the major concerns for prospective EV drivers; charging speed.
BYD’s megawatt system boasts double the capacity of Tesla’s latest V4 Superchargers, which are limited to 500kW. The first models to utilise this advanced technology will be BYD’s upcoming Han L saloon and Tang L SUV (available in China later this year), both featuring next-generation batteries designed to lower internal resistance by 50%, thereby improving charging efficiency.
However, despite its transformative potential, this technology is not compatible with all EVs. Only those designed on a 1,000V architecture can handle such high power levels.
While this breakthrough sets a new standard for charging speed, widespread implementation is further down the line. Currently, BYD is focused on introducing this technology in China by installing over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across the country.
It may take some time before we see this technology and compatible chargers available in the UK. With most efforts will remain centred on reducing battery costs and developing the electric vehicle charging infrastructure necessary to support the Zero Emission Mandate, by 2030.
