What we know about BYD’s Luxury Electric GT

Chinese automaker BYD is pushing further into the premium EV segment with the Denza Z9 GT. Revealed as the flagship model for BYD’s premium Denza brand, with advanced engineering, powerful electric motors and a striking design, the vehicle represents a major step forward for the brand.

Denza began as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, aimed at creating premium electric vehicles with global appeal. The Z9 GT now stands as the brand’s most advanced model to date.

The car debuted at the Beijing Auto Show, showcasing a sleek, aerodynamic design that combines the elegance of a grand tourer with the practicality of an estate-style body. This “shooting brake” layout provides extra space and usability while maintaining the sporty proportions expected from a luxury performance EV.

Smooth lines, a low stance and distinctive LED lighting give the car a futuristic look, reinforcing Denza’s move into the high-end EV segment.

Performance and Powertrain

One of the most impressive aspects of the Denza Z9 GT is its tri-motor electric powertrain.

The setup features:

  • Three electric motors

  • All-wheel drive capability

  • Advanced torque vectoring

Together, these components deliver remarkable performance.

Key Performance Figures

  • Power output: around 952 hp

  • Torque: approximately 1,150 Nm

  • 0–100 km/h: about 3.4 seconds

  • Top speed: 150mph

This level of performance places the Z9 GT firmly within the high-performance EV category, offering acceleration and power typically associated with supercars.

The dual rear motors also allow highly precise power distribution, helping improve cornering stability and traction.

Battery and Electric Range

The Z9 GT is built on BYD’s advanced e-Platform 3.0 Evo, which integrates the battery, motor and electronic systems into a single architecture designed specifically for electric vehicles.

At the heart of the system is BYD’s Blade Battery, known for its improved safety and durability compared with traditional lithium-ion battery designs.

Battery and Range Highlights

  • Battery capacity: approximately 100 kWh

  • Estimated range: up to 630 km (391 miles CLTC)

  • High-power DC charging: up to 270 kW

Some extended-range versions are reported to exceed 1,000 km under CLTC testing, demonstrating the potential of the platform for long-distance electric travel.

Fast charging capability also helps reduce downtime, allowing the car to recharge quickly on high-speed charging networks.

Luxury Interior and Technology

Inside the cabin, the Denza Z9 GT emphasises comfort, connectivity and premium materials.

The interior design features a multi-screen digital cockpit that stretches across the dashboard, providing drivers with navigation, vehicle information and infotainment controls.

Key interior features include:

  • Large digital driver display

  • Central infotainment touchscreen

  • Passenger display

  • Premium Devialet sound system

  • Luxury leather seating

  • Ambient lighting throughout the cabin

The vehicle also includes advanced driver-assistance technology, with features designed to support safer and more convenient driving.

Advanced Driving Technology

The Z9 GT introduces Denza’s new e³ intelligent vehicle platform, which integrates steering, suspension and power systems into a central electronic control architecture.

This allows the car to deliver advanced driving capabilities that go beyond typical EV systems.

One of the most unusual features is independent rear-wheel steering, which improves manoeuvrability and stability.

The technology allows the car to:

  • Perform extremely tight turning circles

  • Move diagonally in certain scenarios

  • Improve stability at high speeds

These features demonstrate how modern EV platforms can introduce entirely new vehicle dynamics.

Design and Practicality

Despite its performance focus, the Z9 GT remains a practical vehicle thanks to its shooting-brake layout.

The extended roofline creates additional cargo space while maintaining the sleek profile expected of a grand touring car.

Design highlights include:

  • Aerodynamic body lines

  • Slim LED lighting signatures

  • Wide stance for improved stability

  • Flush door handles

  • Large alloy wheel options

The overall design blends luxury styling with functional aerodynamics, helping maximise both efficiency and visual appeal.

When will Denza EVs arrive in the UK?

Although the Denza brand currently operates primarily in China, the company has signalled plans to expand internationally in the coming years.

Europe is widely expected to be one of the next major markets for Denza vehicles. If the Z9 GT reaches the UK (expected in 2026) it could become one of the most technologically advanced electric grand tourers available.
