Recent data from New Automotive indicates that in June, electric car sales rose by 1%, making up 19.5% of all new car purchases for the month.
Meanwhile, petrol car sales have dropped to their lowest market share ever at 41.6%, with petrol vehicles making up just 36.4% of new cars bought in June.
Incentives like lower Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rates and Salary Sacrifice Schemes have made EVs more attainable. As electric vehicle (EV) adoption continues, the 2024 Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate target looks achievable. However, manufacturers are continuing to roll out discounts and promotions on their electric vehicles.
Following the UK's general election last week, the Labour Manifesto has outlined plans to reverse the Zero Emission Mandate and ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, indicating that this drop in the sales of petrol cars is likely to continue.
