Could This Be the EV Sports Car Enthusiasts Have Been Waiting For?

The UK's electric vehicle market is planning to welcome something a little different.

Later this year, the SC01, a lightweight electric sports car designed and built in China, will make its UK debut through British importer Small Sports Car Company (SSCC). Rather than chasing massive power figures or luxury technology, the SC01 has been developed with one goal in mind: putting the fun back into driving.

A Lightweight Approach to Electric Performance

One of the biggest criticisms of electric performance cars is weight. Large battery packs often mean heavier vehicles, which can reduce the engaging driving experience many enthusiasts enjoy.

The SC01 aims to change that, thanks to its tubular spaceframe chassis and relatively compact design, the SC01 weighs a claimed 1,365kg – significantly lighter than many electric performance cars currently on sale.

Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing around 429bhp, helping the coupe accelerate from 0-62mph in approximately 2.9 seconds.

Driver Focused by Design

Unlike many modern EVs, the SC01 doesn't appear to rely on oversized touchscreens or complicated technology to create excitement.

Instead, the focus is on:

  • Lightweight construction

  • Compact dimensions

  • Traditional sports car driving position

  • Mechanical driver engagement

  • Clean, minimalist styling

The result is an electric sports car that draws inspiration from classic British lightweight performance cars while embracing modern electric power.

When Will It Arrive?

SSCC currently plans to bring demonstration vehicles to the UK during late 2026, with the first customer deliveries expected to begin in April 2027, although these dates are not yet confirmed. Pricing is expected to start from around £50,000, placing it as a competitor to Alpine, Lotus and Porsche.

A Different Direction for Electric Performance

For many years, performance EVs have focused on outright acceleration. The SC01 takes a different approach, prioritising balance, weight and driving enjoyment over simply delivering the biggest power figures.

Whether it can live up to that promise remains to be seen, but it's encouraging to see manufacturers exploring new ways to make electric driving genuinely exciting.

As more details become available, we'll be keeping a close eye on the SC01 and whether it could become one of the most interesting electric sports cars to reach UK roads.
