The Ford Capri Returns as an Electric SUV

The Ford Capri Returns as an Electric SUV
Posted On By Lease Electric

After nearly a 40-year hiatus, Ford is reviving the Capri, now as an all-electric SUV.

Originally designed as the European equivalent to the Ford Mustang, the Ford Capri launched in 1969 and quickly enjoyed huge success. The Capri's allure lay in its variety of models. In the UK, it featured Cortina 'Kent' engines in 1.3- and 1.6-litre capacities, with the range initially topped by the less favored Essex V4 2.0-litre engine.

The more glamorous Capris soon hit UK roads, with the 3000GT arriving in late 1969, equipped with a 2994cc 138bhp 'Essex' engine, delivering unrivalled performance. For just over £1000, it offered a top speed of 120mph and a 0-60mph time of under 10 seconds.

Over the next 17 years, Ford released different variants of the Capri. Combined, the Capri MK1, MK2, and MK3, sold nearly 1.9 million units before ceasing production in 1986.

Nearly six decades after the initial designs were sketched, the Capri is a staple at Classic Car shows, revered as a legendary vehicle of its era. However, that status is about to change, as the car you’ve always promised yourself, returns.

The all-electric Ford Capri

Set to begin production in the upcoming weeks, the new model shares the MEB electric platform with the boxier Ford Explorer and several Volkswagen Group models, including the Volkswagen ID.5, Skoda Enyaq, and Audi Q4 Sportback.

The new Ford Capri, however, will not be a low-slung, two-door coupe like its predecessors. Instead, the Capri EV is designed as a crossover Coupe SUV. With dimensions of 4634mm in length, 2063mm in width, and 1626mm in height, and a curb weight ranging from 2023kg to 2115kg depending on the specification, it closely matches the Volkswagen ID.5, with which it shares its platform.

Ford Capri EV ‘Blue My Mind’ and ‘Vivid Yellow’

The Capri EV, designed as a crossover SUV, is touted as a practical vehicle with the soul of a sports car. It is based on the electric Ford Explorer and features a sleek design comparable to the Polestar 2. The vehicle boasts a sloping roofline, distinctive LED headlights that pay homage to the Mk3 Capri, and a wraparound contrasting 'grille'. A similar design approach at the rear adds a touch of retro charm.

Available in Agate Black, Frozen White, Magnetic Grey or for the more rebellious amongst us, Vivid Yellow,  Blue My Mind or Lucid Red.
