Second model of the Neue Klasse

BMW has revealed the all-new i3, the second model in its Neue Klasse range and a significant step forward for one of the brand’s most recognisable nameplates.

Reimagining the DNA of the 3 Series for the electric era, the new i3 combines familiar BMW design and driving dynamics with next-generation EV technology. With up to 900km of WLTP range, ultra-fast charging and a completely new digital architecture, it sets a new benchmark for electric saloons.

The launch model, the BMW i3 50 xDrive, delivers 469hp and 645Nm of torque via a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup. Production begins in August 2026, with first UK deliveries expected in late 2026.

Design

”BMW

The new i3 introduces BMW’s Neue Klasse design language to the core of its saloon line-up, clean, modern and instantly recognisable.

Proportions remain classic BMW, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a refined 2.5-box silhouette. The overall design is more minimal, with precise surfacing and aerodynamic optimisation playing a key role in both aesthetics and efficiency.

At the front, a modernised shark-nose design and a reinterpreted horizontal kidney grille create a strong visual identity. Slim, integrated lighting elements bring a contemporary edge, while the side profile is defined by muscular wheel arches, flush door handles and flowing lines.

At the rear, wide-set L-shaped light signatures emphasise stance and width, reinforcing the car’s sporty character. Eleven paint finishes will be available from launch, including the new M Le Castellet Blue.

Interior

”BMW

Inside, the BMW i3 focuses on space, clarity and driver engagement.

The dedicated electric architecture allows for a more open cabin, enhanced by large glass areas and a minimalist layout. The cockpit centres around BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive system, which combines a full-width windscreen display, optional 3D Head-Up Display, central touchscreen and multifunction steering wheel.

The result is a highly intuitive, driver-focused environment designed to keep attention on the road while delivering a seamless digital experience.

Material choice reflects BMW’s sustainability focus, with options including Econeer seat fabrics made from 100% recycled polyester. A range of trims, including the popular M Sport specification, will allow for further personalisation.

Performance

Performance remains at the heart of the i3 experience.

The BMW i3 50 xDrive uses two electric motors to produce 469hp and 645Nm, delivering strong acceleration alongside all-wheel drive stability. However, the real innovation lies in BMW’s new “Heart of Joy” system.

This advanced control unit manages driving dynamics, braking, recuperation and more ,operating up to ten times faster than previous systems. The result is sharper handling, smoother responses and a more connected driving feel.

New features such as Soft-Stop ensure refined braking performance, while updated suspension systems, including optional adaptive M suspension ,balance comfort with the dynamic precision expected from a BMW saloon.

Charging and Range

The new i3 sets a new standard for electric range, offering up to 559miles (900km) WLTP on a single charge.

This is made possible by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which introduces a new battery architecture with cylindrical cells, improved energy density and greater efficiency.

Charging capability is equally impressive. With an 800-volt system and up to 400kW DC charging, the i3 can add up to 248 miles (400km) of range in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions.

BMW has also enhanced the charging experience through intelligent route planning, automatic battery pre-conditioning and real-time charging data. The addition of bidirectional charging further extends usability, allowing the vehicle to supply power externally when needed.

Sustainability

Sustainability has been embedded into every stage of the BMW i3’s lifecycle.

BMW has focused on reducing emissions across development, supply chain, production and use, with measurable improvements already achieved. The i3 can reach a comparable carbon footprint to a combustion engine vehicle after just one to two years of use, depending on driving conditions and energy sources.

Recycled and secondary materials play a key role, including recycled plastics, aluminium and textiles throughout the vehicle. BMW’s “Design for Circularity” approach also ensures easier dismantling and improved material recovery at end of life.

Availability

Production of the new BMW i3 will take place at BMW Group Plant Munich, which has undergone significant upgrades to support the Neue Klasse platform.

Manufacturing begins in August 2026, with UK customer deliveries expected in late 2026.

Further details, including pricing and full specifications, will be announced closer to launch.
