In the upcoming weeks, we’re anticipating an increase in the availability of pre-registered cars. But what is a pre-registered car, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of selecting one for your next vehicle?
What is a Pre-Registered Car?
A pre-registered car refers to a vehicle that has been registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) before to being made available to customers. In essence, a pre-registered car is one that has been registered but remains virtually untouched and ready for the road, often showing little to no mileage on the odometer.
Manufacturers, dealers, and leasing companies frequently pre-register cars to achieve their targets, move outdated stock, and enhance available discounts.
The benefits of choosing a Pre-Registered Car
- Pre-registered vehicles are typically offered at a lower price compared to brand-new cars, as they are classified as "used" once registered, even if they haven't been driven.
- They're readily available, and can be delivered much quicker than those that are factory ordered.
- If registered by 31st March 2025, the first year Vehicle Excise Duty (also known as Road Tax) is charged at the 2024/2025 rate. Therefore, if this is a zero emissions, fully electric car your first year VED rate will be £0.
- If you choose a fully electric car, that produces zero emissions, and it is registered by 31st March 2025, the car is exempt from paying the Expensive Car Supplement.
The disadvantages of choosing a Pre-Registered Car
- Pre-registered vehicles are currently available in stock. This means the specifications are already preselected, and you won't be able to add optional extras or change colours. Your choices will be limited to what is on offer.
- A registration number has already been assigned, which may include older plates that are not currently available. For instance, if you select a pre-registered car in April 2025, you might receive a 74 plate instead of the new 25 plate.
- Since the manufacturer's warranty begins on the registration date, you will have a shorter warranty period compared to choosing a brand new, unregistered vehicle.
