Grey is officially Britain’s favourite car colour once again, holding onto the number one spot for the eighth year running, according to the latest SMMT new car registration data.

In 2025, a record-breaking 558,050 grey cars were registered across the UK, a 2.7% increase year-on-year. That means grey accounted for 27.6% of all new car registrations, comfortably securing its place at the top of the UK’s car colour rankings.

Grey, Black and Blue Still Lead the Way

British car buyers continue to favour safe, sleek and understated shades, with the top three colours dominating the market.

Grey

  • 558,050 registrations

  • Up 2.7%

  • 27.6% market share

Black

  • 464,369 registrations

  • Up 9.7%

  • Highest volume since 2019

Blue

  • 306,349 registrations

  • Up 4.9%

Together, grey, black and blue made up 65.8% of all new cars registered in the UK in 2025, showing just how strong the country’s preference remains for modern, understated tones.

Silver Makes a Comeback into the Top Five

While white held steady in fourth place, one of the most noticeable shifts in the data was the return of silver, which broke into the top five for the first time in nearly a decade.

It’s a sign that classic shades are starting to regain momentum, as drivers look for colours that feel both premium and timeless.

Green Cars See the Biggest Growth in the UK Top 10

The standout performer of 2025 was green.

Although it ranked seventh overall, registrations rose sharply by 46.3%, reaching 99,793 units. That’s the colour’s highest volume in 20 years, marking a clear shift towards more expressive, distinctive choices , even if neutral colours still dominate the top of the table.

What Are the Most Popular Colours for Electric Cars?

Car colour trends are evolving fastest in the electric vehicle market, where buyers are showing growing confidence in bolder shades.

Even so, grey remained the most popular colour for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with 131,984 grey electric cars registered in 2025.

But the biggest surprise was green EVs:

  • Green registrations surged 95.2%

  • Rising to 23,249 units

  • Meaning green now account for 1 in 20 new electric cars

  • Compared with just 1 in 300 the year before

It’s a dramatic leap, and one that suggests EV buyers are increasingly willing to stand out.

What Is the Least Popular Car Colour in the UK?

While neutral colours continue to thrive, brighter traditional favourites are losing ground.

Red slipped to sixth place, falling to its lowest market share ever recorded (5.8%), highlighting a clear move away from more vibrant, classic choices.

At the very bottom of the chart, turquoise was the UK’s least popular car colour in 2025. Registrations dropped by an astonishing 96.7%, leaving just 12 new turquoise cars registered nationwide.
