Traffic lights could soon have four colours

Traffic lights could soon have four colours

Research indicates that adding a traffic light signal specifically for autonomous vehicles could significantly reduce road congestion.

A study by North Carolina State University found that an extra white signal for self-driving cars could improve our travel times.

A four-light system would operate like current traffic lights, with the additional light indicating when autonomous vehicles are present. It signals human drivers that autonomous cars have taken over traffic control through wireless communication. During this 'white phase,' human drivers must follow the lead vehicle, which guides them efficiently through congestion.

The system requires autonomous vehicles to communicate with each other and the traffic infrastructure. The colour of the fourth light is irrelevant; its purpose is to instruct human drivers.

Simulations show that even with as few as 10% autonomous vehicles at an intersection, delays can decrease by 3%. With 30% autonomy, delays can reduce by 10.7%.

AI can lead traffic more efficiently than traditional lights, allowing autonomous vehicles to determine the most efficient traffic sequence, saving time and money. Although four-light signals are not yet a reality, the UK's new Automated Vehicles (AV) Act could introduce self-driving cars to our roads by 2026.
