Volkswagen is preparing to launch the ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV that signals a new design era for the brand and promises up to 260 miles of range. Expected in UK showrooms in 2026, the ID. Cross will effectively replace the T-Cross as Volkswagen’s small SUV, this time fully electric.
Sitting between the upcoming ID.2 (ID. Polo) and the larger ID.4 and ID.5, the ID. Cross is aimed at drivers who want compact dimensions, strong practicality and everyday usability, without stepping up to a larger family SUV.

Design
The ID. Cross introduces Volkswagen’s new EV design philosophy, known as “Pure Positive”. The idea centres on clarity, simplicity and approachability, while subtly referencing familiar models such as the Golf and the original VW Bus.
Visually, it is designed to adopt a confident compact SUV stance. The profile is clean and upright, with smooth body surfaces, strong C-pillars and a straight window line that gives the car a solid, planted look. Full-width LED light bars feature at both the front and rear, with Volkswagen describing the front lighting signature as intentionally “smiling”, designed to create a friendly and recognisable face.
The concept version rides on 21-inch Balboa alloy wheels, although slightly smaller alloys are expected on production models to prioritise efficiency and ride comfort. The standout Urban Jungle Green paint finish shown on the concept could make it to the UK line-up, though final specifications are yet to be confirmed.
In terms of size, the ID. Cross measures 4,161mm in length, 1,839mm in width and 1,588mm in height, with a 2,601mm wheelbase. That places it very close to the current T-Cross and broadly comparable with other compact electric SUVs such as the Alfa Romeo Junior, Volvo EX30 and upcoming Kia EV2.
Interior
Despite its compact footprint, Volkswagen is promising impressive interior space thanks to the dedicated MEB electric platform and its flat-floor layout.
Boot capacity is expected to stand at 450 litres, putting it among the more practical options in the compact EV segment. There’s also a 25-litre front boot under the bonnet, along with additional under-seat storage to maximise everyday usability.
The cabin has been described as a “lounge-style oasis”, focusing on comfort and calmness. Fabric-covered surfaces, warm colour tones and ambient lighting contribute to a minimalist, relaxed atmosphere. With a panoramic roof that floods the cabin with natural daylight, fully flat-folding seats, and a light-toned concept interior, the space feels open, airy, and effortlessly bright.
Importantly, Volkswagen appears to have listened to feedback from earlier ID models. The ID. Cross reintroduces physical buttons for key functions, reducing reliance on touch-sensitive controls. Inside, you’ll find an 11-inch digital driver display paired with a 13-inch central touchscreen, complemented by shortcut buttons beneath the screen, a redesigned multi-function steering wheel and improved natural voice control.
The infotainment system also introduces configurable “Atmospheres”, linking lighting, sound and climate settings to create different moods within the cabin.
Range and Charging
The ID. Cross is built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, with future upgrades falling under the MEB+ development programme. This next phase focuses on improved software, efficiency and overall system performance.
Volkswagen is forecasting a WLTP range of up to 260 miles, although final battery sizes and official figures will be confirmed closer to launch.
Charging speeds have not yet been announced, but DC rapid charging of around 125kW is expected. That would allow a 10–80% charge in approximately 20 to 25 minutes under ideal conditions, depending on battery specification and charging infrastructure.
Performance
The ID. Cross concept uses a front-wheel-drive layout powered by a newly developed electric motor producing 155kW, or 208bhp. The ID. Cross is expected to offer a braked towing capacity of up to 1,200kg making it suitable for bike carriers and small trailers.
Availability
Volkswagen has confirmed that the production version of the ID. Cross is expected to arrive in late 2026. UK pricing has not yet been announced, but it will sit below the ID.4 and above the ID.2 in the brand’s growing electric line-up.
More details, including final specifications and pricing, are likely to be confirmed closer to its official launch.
